Pay Back

I heard a great story today: A little boy asked his father what he did for a living. He told his son that he sent out letters to people reminding them of what they owed to his company for services rendered. This inspired the boy to write down the things that he did around the house and gave a bill to his mother. When finished, the bill looked like this--

For cleaning my room= .25

taking out the garbage .10

helping his sister with homework  .15

Mom owes me .50

Later that day, his mom gave him back the envelope with the money inside and a note that read --

For caring for you when you are sick =0

For cooking dinner each night=0

For helping you with your homework each day and sending you to a good school =0

You owe Mom =0

The boy finally realized everything that the mother had done for him. In a material world, we naturally put a price on anything we do. We become very protective of our time, especially when it comes to church. We quickly find other things to do. This weekend we lost an hour sleep and many of us may have peeked at the clock in the bedroom and wondered why were so tired.

God's balance sheet far exceeds what we can repay. He is not looking for a large payment, just a small contribution on the interest. All He desires is our love and fidelity. Make an effort to spend some time with Him through Mass and prayer.

This Lent should give us time to contemplate how we can settle our debts. Reconcile with the people who have fallen out of your life. Lift up the spirits of someone who needs the presence of a kind voice. Practice little acts of kindness that may change your tiny corner if this world.
